Why Pasture Raised Pork?

When our customers first see our pasture raised, heritage breed pork, they are often shocked by the deep red color and visible marbling. When compared side by side with grain fed, commercially raised pork, the regenerative, grass-fed difference is immediately apparent. For many, this will be the first time they've seen what pork naturally looks like!

In the 1980s, the pork industry began to breed hogs for extreme leanness. This was in response to nutritional guidelines at the time which called for diets high in sugar and carbs and low in animal fat. These hogs were designed to grow efficiently on grain intensive diets, in confinement factory style feeding operations. Hogs raised on the farms required large doses of antibiotic, and present serious risks for human and environmental health.

A Difference You Can See & Taste

At Etta Hills Farm, we believe we get the best results when we work with nature, not against it. Our hogs are raised from birth on open pasture, where they enjoy a varied diet of green forage, roots, and insects, in addition to sweet potatoes from Vardaman Ms and spent distillers grain from Wonderbird Spirits in Taylor, Ms. Not only does raising pork on pasture lead to happier hogs and better meat - hogs play a vital role in our regenerative system, helping us improve our soil and water quality.

Studies have shown that pasture raised pork contains significantly better Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratios, and is higher in Vitamin D and Vitamin E. However, the real proof is in the FLAVOR! Nothing is more satisfying than hearing our customers tell us how much they loved our pork. The difference between pastured pork and commodity pork can be joyfully shocking. Experience the difference for yourself!
